Think Of These Things- Thoughts Left Unguarded

Thoughts are things. Left unguarded we expect them to rule us with ruthless persistence. Like attracts like. We are what we think. Emerson believed there was something stronger then any material force. It was his belief that thoughts ruled the world. To think positively is sometimes referred to as refusing to face reality. But who is wise enough to determine what reality is, and who can describe it? The things we see and touch are merely objects made up of tiny particles we can’t see individually. So it is with reality- tiny thought we don’t remember thinking, but the result is obviously positive or negative.

If we think continually of how sick and nervous, how unhappy, and poverty-stricken we ware, then we can expect to be so afflicted. Tiny thoughts produce large results. When we’ve learned to control our circumstances.

Imperfect thoughts, like unsavory characters, can come to anyone’s door, but we don’t have to let them in. Sometimes we have to look beyond present appearances and set the truth of things that any product is only worth as much as the quality of its materials.

We would be wise to put into practice the teachings of Phillipeans 4.8.

“whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things”.

Think Of These Things- Interpretation Of Experience

Thoreau told us that each person can interpret another’s experience only by his own. The pond reflects a day of blue skies, but when the sky is misty and gray, so does the pond. The same pond reflects different conditions. And so it is with us.

Trouble begins when we cannot interpret our own reflection — often, because we don’t want to. What is showing may be a totally different thing from all that we have ever experienced. Every action or reaction does not personally apply to us, but we are in danger of believing it does.

Give others room. Understand as far as possible and refuse to be indifferent or uncaring. They are reflecting the way the pond reflects. Time changes us all — do be patient.

Think Of These Things- New Years Resolutions

A new galaxy of shining promises made to oneself are resolutions made with the utmost faith that self is listening and will carry out the plans. But self is inpredictable as a child playing in the street; it may dart in any direction according to the mood and to wharever catches its attention.

At the first sign of a challenge, self may bck and lean hard upon the old ways of doing things, no how wrong it may be. Resolutons do very little to change a way of living. Tehy are easily made and easily forgotten. There may be a sincere desire to keep a resolutio, but if self has not changed inwardly, little can depend on the outward change. It is said that we promise according to our hopes and perform according to our selfhsiness. Failure ot keep our promises to others is a disappointment, but failure within oneself is disaster. A little peformance is worth a host of promises on nay day that starts a new year.

What Is The Essence Of True Courage

Courage “

QUESTION: What does “courage” have to do with being a person of good
character…with someone who stays true to their principles and their values?

ANSWER: EVERYTHING!

You see, being values-driven means two things:

Doing what’s right – following our conscience; refusing to compromise our
principles, despite pressures and temptations to the contrary, and

Taking a stand against what’s wrong – speaking out, whenever we see others do
things that are incorrect or inappropriate.

Unquestionably, both of those require guts and fortitude…they require courage.

Courage is…

Following your conscience instead of “following the crowd”.
Refusing to take part in hurtful or disrespectful behaviors.
Sacrificing personal gain for the benefit of others.
Speaking your mind even though others don’t agree.
Taking complete responsibility for your actions…and your mistakes.
Following the rules – and insisting that others do the same.
Challenging the status quo in search of better ways.
Doing what you know is right- regardless of the risks and potential
consequences.

I’d like to share the “Cadet Prayer” that is repeated during chapel services at
the U.S. Military Academy:

“Make us to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong, and never to be
content with a half truth when the whole truth can be won. Endow us with the
courage that is born of loyalty to all that is noble and worthy, that scorns to
compromise with vice and injustice and knows no fear when truth and right are in
jeopardy.”

That is truly the essence of courage.

Think Of These Things- The Silence Of Human Dignity

Human dignity is that silent something in us that keeps us from falling
below the level where others look down on us to make light of our very
existence. None of us exists who cannot sense to some degree the feeling
that others hold for us. It may create in us a “show them” attitude that
takes us through life more successfully, but it will more likely destroy
our desire to be anything more than what is expected of us.

It is an appalling thing to see others impose their superiority upon the
human dignity of those whose literacy may not be equal to their own.
Only profound ignorance could convince anyone they have the right to see
and idly judge another’s intelligence, or to insult the dignity of any
human being. The little silent people who have not yet discovered within
themselves the abilities they need to lift themselves, still have the
right and dignity of being human. A small amount of respect and
direction might start them on the road to better things, though it might
be all uphill. At least if they know it is all uphill they may work
harder and reach a place where they can look back at those with lofty
ideas about themselves, standing forever stagnant, and feel more
compassion than they could ever have felt.

The Silence in Human Dignity has been absent from humankind for centuries. It is time to recapture it and is one  the missing nurturing components to why there is such dissension and hate in the world and among humans.

Think Of These Things

“I owe no man anything but love” it is said. But what is love? Love is duty –
whatever duty may require to accomplish a good thing.

Love is peace. One must not only be peaceful but contribute to the peace of
others. Let there be peace and let it begin with me.

Love is sometimes pain. We must give up something that causes us pain because it is for the good of the greatest number.

Love is understanding. That others do not have to forever explain their actions
to us. That we know their reasons without being told.

Love is courage. Courage to lead where one has the ability to lead. Courage to
stand up for what one believes in and wants to live.

Love is faith. Faith in God/ess/The Great Spirit, faith in self, and faith in others. Everyone is not
above reproach, but we must have faith that the majority strives to be.

Coleridge wrote, “He prayeth best who loveth best,” which seems to rule out all
hollow and self-heard prayers. For those who truly love do not hear themselves
only, or rule all life useless because they cannot love or pray.

Life can be as simple as love and prayer. Where the two mingle there can be no
jealousy, resentment or fear.

Jealousy makes us compare our lot with another’s. And there can be no
comparison, for no two people are alike.

Resentment plunges an otherwise logical soul into despair and an endless journey
of revenge.

And fear rushes us headlong into situations that detract, accidents that could
be prevented, and long delays in reaching our goals.

But if we can, for a few moments, invite into our hearts a thing called love,
then we can pray. And if we can pray we have the source of all answers to our
aid.
